Sleep Mask vs Blackout Blinds: What Actually Gets You to 100% Darkness
It's the classic bedroom debate: spend a few hundred on blackout blinds, or spend a fraction of that and cover your eyes? Both camps swear by their side, and both are hiding something. Having spent an unhealthy amount of time obsessing over darkness, here's the honest comparison — cost, coverage, travel, and the light leaks each camp politely ignores.
The short version
Blinds darken a room; a mask darkens your eyes. Blinds win on "nothing on my face" and whole-room darkness for two people. A good contoured mask wins on cost, actually reaching 100%, blocking indoor light, and going wherever you sleep. For serious darkness: the mask is the finish line, blinds are a very nice bonus.
First: why 100% matters (and 95% doesn't cut it)
Your eyes register light even through closed eyelids — and at night, when your eyes are dark-adapted, they're extraordinarily sensitive to it. The glow around a curtain edge that seems harmless at 11pm is exactly what your brain reads as "morning" when you surface between sleep cycles at 4:45am in summer.
That's the trap of "mostly dark": it works fine at midnight and betrays you at dawn, precisely when your sleep is lightest and easiest to break. The whole game is what your eyes see during those fragile surfacing moments — which is why the last 5% of darkness matters more than the first 95%.
The case for blackout blinds — and the leaks nobody mentions
What they do well: a properly fitted blackout blind kills the streetlight glow, keeps the whole room dark for both sleepers at once, and asks nothing of your face. For nurseries, kids' rooms and shared bedrooms, they're genuinely worth having.
What the brochure doesn't say:
- The halo. Unless your blinds run in side channels (the expensive kind), light slips around all four edges — the classic glowing frame at 5am. "Blackout" fabric, 90–95% result. Getting a window to true 100% means channels, pelmets and sealed edges: a proper project.
- They fix exactly one room. The hotel on holiday, the in-laws' spare bed, the plane, the night-shift sleep at noon in a rented flat: your blinds stay home. Every night away from that one window, you're back to square one.
- They do nothing about indoor light. Your partner's phone at midnight, the hallway light under the door, the router LED — all still land on your eyes. The window was never the only source.
- The bill. Proper fitted blackout blinds run £50–200+ per window; made-to-measure with side channels goes well beyond. A two-window bedroom is a £100–400+ project — per room.
The case for a sleep mask — and its honest catch
What it does well: a contoured mask with a sealed nose area takes your eyes to actual 100% — sunrise, streetlight, phone screens, LEDs, all of it, in any room in the world, for less than a single blind. It's the only option on the table that also covers travel, shift work, and the couple where one person reads while the other sleeps. The darkness follows you, not the window.
The honest catch: the mask has to be good, or it ends up in the drawer. And most aren't. Flat satin masks leak at the nose slit and slide off by 3am; padded ones get shoved by the pillow and press on your eyes the moment you turn onto your side. The verdict: if you're building the perfect bedroom and money is no object — do both, genuinely. If you want 100% darkness tonight, everywhere you'll ever sleep, for a fraction of one window: the mask gets you there first. Add blinds later for the room itself, kids, or resale value — as the bonus, not the foundation.
One more thing the blinds can't do
Whichever side of the debate you land on, remember light was only ever half the problem. The bin lorry, the neighbours, the snoring — blinds don't touch any of it, and neither does a mask alone. Total darkness plus a quieter noise floor is what actually protects a full night; fixing one and ignoring the other is how people end up "doing everything right" and still waking at 5am.
